Redwood City, San Mateo County
Redwood City got its name in the 1850s, when lumber cut from the redwood forests in the hills above was hauled down to a creekside landing and shipped to San Francisco. The landing grew into the Port of Redwood City, the only deepwater port on the southern arm of the bay. Cement, sand and scrap metal now cross its docks.
